Hello, dear users.

Everyone who is using eMule, eDonkey2000 or a similar client will have asked him/herself at least once : "am I safe by using this?".

The answer is "No, but you will minimize the risk of getting caught by using an IPfilter".

But what is an IPfilter?

Let me first explain the basics of an IP:
Quote:
IP: Internet Protocol, protocol in the TCP/IP internet layer for communication between nets and their hosts. An IP-address uniquely identifies each network and each of its hosts on the internet. Addresses consist of four bytes that can be represented by four integers (0 to 255) seperated by dots, e.g. "157.189.162.75". Dependent on the address' class and a subnet mask, a specific number of bits identify the net or subnet and the rest a PC's address within this net/subnet.

So basically, an IP defines who and where you are in the network.

Many anti-p2p and anti-piracy groups and companies also frequent the servers and check who is offering what so that they can then take legal action against you. So, it is best to protect yourself, with an IPfilter.

What does the IPfilter do?
Quote:
The IPfilter filters out any bad IP or IPs used by anti-piracy groups or companies, so that you can be relatively safe. It also filters bad or leecher mods of emule that just steal files from you and never upload to others. It also stops emule clients that just spam or are there for the purpose of sniffing out what files you have

So here comes the question: "how do I get an IPfilter and which one out there is the safest?"

IPfilters can be found on many sites, some blocking thousands of IPs, some blocking tens of thousands of IPs. Unfortunately, a high number of IP-blocks does not necessarily mean that this filter is better, it is just badly configued, more about that later.

There has been a method to get a "good" IPfilter via peerguradian and Bluetack's so-called "blocklist converter", that converts peerguardian's blocklist to an IPfilter.dat (the format needed for ed2k clients). But I strongly advise you NOT to use this method. The reason is the following:

0bjectMa$$ wrote:
The problem with this method is that anybody can append IP's to this peerguardian site, which would be not a too big problem if they would actually check them, there are loads of IPs that are blocked unjustified.
An example: everyone knows that [KOR]pruna
(very very good sharers on the net, their upload is generally 1mbit+) is a very helpful community for the ed2k network, and for some reason peerguardian's blocklist blocks about 40% of them. Not only that , but also other users and whole groups are also blocked for no reason and unjustified

So, what to do?

Well, as if I and ShadowCast had no answer for that, ey? Wink

We devised an IPfilter based on the above (bad) method and went through this filter manually, checking literally every line in there and proofed the IPs. We then amended some ranges and added some more that were not blocked by PG's list, ranges that really should have been added in the first place.

The latest release:
http://anonym.to/?http://www.i-svcd.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/ShadowCast/Ipfilter.dat

The first lines should read:
Code:
## ShadowCast Ipfilter.dat rev.47 updated 150106:21:13
## Added/changed HiJacked IP-blocks
## Added/fixed new Bogons
## Added/fixed new SafeNet Ips
##

If they do then you have the latest one Smile

BIG Thanks to I-SVCD I also have a nice host for the Ipfilter, if you guys want then please add this to the "update from URL"-box in your emule-preferences under "security". This link will not change in the future, and the first line should tell you what revision the filter has.

Please still help sharing the rar-file, your help is always appreciated. And do not hesitate to get in contact with me in case you need an IP looked after or fixed, we are also only human and make mistakes, so we also rely on you, the community.

Now, how does one use this filter?

1) Download this filter and unpack it into your emule/config dir:

2) Go to emule, to go preferences -> security and press RELOAD:

3) After that you will notice that the IPfilter was loaded:

At last, you are done and after a restart of emule ready to go smile.gif

If any questions arouse, just pm me

Lord_Anubis

Diclaimer: The IPfilter has been tested thoroughly for quite some time, if you should have problems however then just remove it.
The IPfilter will be updated on a regular basis, so watch this space.
We are in need of help on getting new IPs to filter, so if you have some IPs that you feel need adding, then please pm me thse filters in this format:
Code:
IP = what kind of mod = reason for blocking

e.g.
Code:
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx. = lsd mod = leecher mod

Any help is appreciated and you will be mentioned at the new version.
If you can provide webspace for us to upload the IPfitler to (it is less than 500k packed) then we would be grateful. Smile

Filter is updated:

Code:
The main focus this time was on opening some ranges for
more Eastshare users (thanks to TLF for the heads-up) and
blocking of KETAMINE-, LSD- and NeoMule-mods.

The main problem was to block static IP's only hence the
long wait for this version. We were also busy with the
creation of a new mod for emule, based on ZZUL and Sivka 44d

Special thanks fly out to EmulEspana for their help on the
Eastshare IPs, and thanks to many others (see below)

          Features:

           - revised IPlist from EmulEspana (18.11.04)
           - several IPranges changed or amended
           - added  2 ranges from anti-p2p authorities in Asia
           - added  5 ranges from anti-p2p authorities from the U.S.
           - added  7 ranges from NeoMule
           - added 45 ranges from Ktamine-users/spammers
           - added 13 ranges from LSD-/NeoLSD mods

Greetings and thanks go out to all those groups and helpers
who made this filter possible and took the time to actually
go through the filter manually and amending the lines.

Special thanks go out to emulEspana for fixing their filters
for Eastshare clients, as we all know how much they contribute
           to the scene

Very special thanks go out to Rado, Ranzor, 8ZM8 and killmaus
for their great help with getting us the IPs for KETAMINE.

Big thanks go out to the Fachhochschule Augsburg and their IT
facilities that make our development for a new client possible

Thanks go out to all contributors, you are too many yo list,

great work m8,

just a question, are you blocking all mods not on the emule-project?
or just problem ip's

LSD for example? AFAIK got kicked from the main project for something small, asked to quickly or something like that. not really a bad client like some others. it has adjustable slots so people will be using for releasing, do you want to ban them?
please correct me if I have it wrong. the others I don't know , but how hard core do you wish to be, mldonkey also does not conform to emule-project rules, again poeple use for releasing cause you have total control over the settings.

FYI simillar work being done here: http://www.openmedia.info

No, the filter is not blocking all mods, only the ones that are deemed leecher mods, where LSD does count to. The mods itself are not all blocked, only the IPs of the users that are most agressive/harmful to the ed2k network. The is no option in LSD that is not already in ZZUL or Sivka or Pawico, so I don't know why LSD should be that much better, as it is not IMO

As to openmedia.info: Their filter is created by the blocklist manager, which contains ranges we removed to make emule work properly, as the IPfilter created via the peerguardian blocklist conversion (and openmedia does it that way) is blocking clients that are good for the network, but allows some ranges that are used by anti-p2p authorities. Hence this version is made for ed2k clients ONLY and sohuld not be used as a list for peerguardian.

great, only people abusing, or you are blocking many ok users.
I haven't used LSD of ages but it had a few features ZZUL doesn't,
RSS feeds (or am I thinking of The Black hand), & I used mainly the option to open more slots,
ZZUL gets around this very well with the release priority(it's much better IMO).
Otherwise with the credit ratio thingy it was hard to download & release at the same time.

Like in mldonkey the bittorents take over,
I get around it by opening 30 slots but it does means everyone is slow
but also forces them to share & trade between each other instead of removing.

great job , appriciated here

This is custom made by pd101 admin Tech-Addict on 12.14.2004.

Posted by InNYC over at PD101. Its a huge one cause Tech-Addict is one security driven guy. Ultra safe and you can use it for BitComet also, just paste it in C:\Program Files\BitComet\rules

Okie Dokie.

I have:-

LA's IP Filter
Peer Guardian

Is it safe to uninstall peer guardian and the add philmie's file in.

What I seem to like from peer guardian is the constant updates, the neighs seem to be it blocks good ip addresses.

guess, lord_anubis will post this too, but here you go until he comes:

Code:
   _________________________________________________________________
       |                                                                 |
                              Release Information:
                              --------------------

This is finally the new and last IPfilter.dat for 2004. Yes,
the 27th revision is finally done.

The main focus this time was getting the info of all the
TRIBES servers together and implement them. As usual we also
blocked a new list of KETAMINE-, LSD- and NeoLSD-users.

Our main thanks goes out to the crew of Nexus23 who were
more than just helpful, in fact their input was the main
drive behind getting this one out!

          ---------------PLEASE READ THIS, IMPORTANT!-----------------

WHY DOES THE OLD FILTER BLOCK ABOUT 14.000 CLIENTS AND THIS
          ONLY ABOUT 6.500?

Well, the reason behind this is because this filter has been
revised much more efficiently than before, again to the
          Nexus23 guys.
The main reason for that much less IPs is because we made the
same mistake as Bluetack/Methlabs and used to include the
"City of..." or "Town of..." IPs, IPs and IPranges that do not
need to be banned at all. It took us until rev. 27 to realize
that, but we all make mistakes, and after testing this filter
since the beginning of December we noticed ZERO attacks or
even pings from those IPs, hence it is time for them to go.
The good thing now is that this filter is not only smaller,
but you gain about 40% of the resources the old filter used
to take up for emule, making your mule much more efficient.

Again, all props for this trick to the Nexus23 guys!

          Features:

           - revised IPlist from EmulEspana/Nexus23 (26.12.04)
           - several IPranges changed or amended
           - added  2 ranges from anti-p2p authorities from the U.S.
           - added 12 ranges from NeoMule
           - added  5 ranges from Ketamine-users/spammers
           - added 23 ranges from LSD-/NeoLSD mods
           - added TRIBES server ranges
